Britannia Gardens, Girlington
Growing Together mural – by Sven Shaw
As part of Bradford City of Culture 2025, I was commissioned to create a mural at Britannia Gardens in Girlington. The artwork features the national flowers of countries associated with the communities of Girlington.
- Rose represents both England and Slovakia
- Jasmine represents Pakistan,
- Lotus represents India
- Waterlily represents Bangladesh and the DRC (Democartic Repulic
of Congo) - Yellow trumpet flower represents Nigeria
- Poppy represents Poland.
These are all blooming from the same vine representing the different communities coming together to create something beautiful in the community garden.
Behind the flowers are illustrations based on drawings by members of the Girlington
community. These include plants and animals drawn by Girlington Primary gardening club and illustrations of Girlington buildings (Morrisons, Adam Masjid, Listers Mill and St.
Williams) drawn by members of the public. Their placement on the undulating vine is also a representation of the steep hills of Girlington.
